Wayne Wang's A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS

Wayne Wang's A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS Aug 29 2008 - 3:53pm Sundance Kabuki Cinemas 1881 Post Street, SF CA
The Bay Area's own Wayne Wang returns to his indie-filmmaking roots with the family drama A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS, opening August 29 at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas, 1881 Post Street in San Francisco. A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS, a Magnolia Pictures release, runs 83 minutes, is in Mandarin and English with English subtitles, and is not rated by the MPAA .

It’s been 15 years since Wayne Wang’s adaptation of Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club (1993). For his “return” to Asian American storytelling, Wang chooses another literary source about immigrant families: Bay Area author Yiyun Li’s A Thousand Years of Good Prayers. Li’s intimate portraits of cross-generational, Chinese immigrants ring familiar with Wang’s early films, especially Dim Sum (1985) and Eat a Bowl of Tea (1989). However, it’s not the younger generation at center any more; A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS follows the travails of the older Mr. Shi (Henry O) as he attempts to reconcile with his estranged daughter, Yilan (Faye Yu).

Mr. Shi is a widower and a retired man from Beijing. When Yilan, his only daughter who lives in the US, has a divorce, he decides to visit her in the small town where she works as a librarian. His intention is to stay with her until he helps her recover from the trauma. He is a "rocket scientist", Mr. Shi likes to tell people he meets in America, and enjoys their attention. But Yilan acts less enthusiastic about his presence, nor is she interested in his plan to rescue her marriage and reconstruct her life. When Mr. Shi persists in finding out the reason for the divorce, Yilan starts to avoid him. Facing a confrontation with Yilan's that Mr. Shi has never been prepared to face, he finally accepts things as they are, and reaches a small understanding with his daughter and her life.

A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS was the opening night film at the 2008 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.
