Proposition 8 the most expensive proposition campaign in California history

The two sides battling over Proposition 8 spent more than $84 million in the campaign, with opponents of the gay marriage ban outspending the victorious supporters by nearly $5 million, according to final campaign reports filed today.

Opponents spent $44,651,104 while supporters spent $39,914,120, according to campaign reports filed with the Secretary of State.

The last report was made public Monday and showed the largest opposition -- No on 8, Equality For All -- spent a total of $43,063,146.

The other final campaign reports were filed last week in the most expensive ballot measure on a social issue in the nation's history .

Voters approved the gay marriage ban by a 52 percent to 48 percent margin aon the Nov. 4 ballot, but opponents are challenging the constitutionality of the measure in the state Supreme Court.
