Advocates of gay marriage are waiting for Federal Judge Vaughn Walker to release his ruling on whether or not California’s ban on gay marriage violates the constitution. What most didn’t know during the January trial is that Judge Walker is openly gay, with an interesting twist.
The judge has been accused over the years of being hostile to civil rights in general, especially for gays. That concern caused Democrats to oppose his nomination by President Ronald Regain in 1987. He was ultimately appointed.
Judge Walker ruled in favor of the U.S. Olympic Committee to stop the Gay Olympic Games from using the word “Olympic.” Today, the international competition is called “Gay Games.”
Critics say his sexual orientation should have no influence on how he interprets the U.S. Constitution. His ruling will be appealed to a higher court no matter what, according to experts. But to keep him off this case would be like preventing a female judge from presiding over a case focused on a female issue.
A ruling on Proposition 8 is expected in the next three to four months.
